UNDERSTANDING DENIM, JEANS & CHAMBRAY
DENIM:
Denim is one kind of warp faced twill fabric. In the case of denim fabric dyed
yarn (indigo dye) is used as warp and white yarn is used as weft but sometimes
colored yarn can also be used as weft. For making denim 2/1 twill or 3/1 twill structure
is followed.
Most of the cases, indigo
dye is used in denim production because it produces the desired brilliant
blue shades and allows for the characteristic of wash-down effect. Its
unique properties, including low affinity for cotton fibers, enable the
creation of designs and finishes like stone washing and acid washing.
Direct, sulfur, reactive,
pigment dyes etc are also used to dye denim. In the last decade, denim was
mainly dyed with indigo (67%), sulfur black (26%) and other sulfur colors (6%).
