DETERMINATION OF FABRIC GSM

GSM: GSM stands for "grams per square meter" and is a unit used to measure the weight of fabric [1]. For instance, a fabric with a GSM of 200 means that the weight of one square meter of that fabric is 200 grams. GSM relates to a fabric’s weight. The heavier the weight of the fabric, the thicker the fabric is and vice versa. [2]

GSM CUTTER:

Radius of specimen cut by GSM Cutter 5.64 cm (Diameter 11.28 cm)

STEPS OF DETERMINING FABRIC GSM [3]:

Step-1: Specimen cutting by Schroder GSM Cutter or Hydraulic GSM Cutter.

Step-2: Weighing of the Specimen with the help of Electric balance

Step-3: GSM=Specimen weight*100

FINDING GSM WITHOUT GSM CUTTER

METHOD-1:

Specimen Size10 Cm x 10 Cm

Area of the Specimen= 100 Cm2

If specimen weight is 1.65 gm

Then,

GSM=1.65x100

         =165

METHOD-2:

Specimen Size 1 inch x 1 inch

Assume that the specimen weight is 0.11 gm

Then,

GSM=0.11x1550

               =170

METHOD-3: Available dimension of specimen [4]

Note:

1 inch = 2.54 Cm

16 inch = (16*2.54) Cm

            = 40.64 Cm
